Iowa casinos post $136.1 million in July revenue, down 6% from last year

Iowa casinos brought in $136.1 million in July, marking a 6% decline from the same month last year, according to figures from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission.

The state’s 19 casinos reported $123 million from slot machines, down 6.7% year-over-year, while table games generated $13.1 million, up 0.8%, according to the commission’s monthly report.

Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino once again led the state, posting the highest revenue among Iowa’s commercial gaming properties for the month.

The July figures extend a pattern of softening performance for Iowa’s casino market. The drop follows a similar year-over-year decline last July, when the state’s casinos generated $144.72 million.

Third consecutive year of decline

Iowa’s casino industry has now posted three straight fiscal years of falling revenue. For the fiscal year ending in June, the state’s casinos took in $1.679 billion, down 2.6% from the prior year’s $1.724 billion.

Gaming officials have characterized the downward trend as a market correction following a post-pandemic spike in gambling activity. Revenue remains above pre-pandemic levels, though the sustained decline marks a shift from the elevated performance seen immediately after casinos reopened.

The latest monthly figures show slots continue to dominate Iowa’s casino revenue mix, accounting for more than 90% of the July total. The modest uptick in table game revenue has not been enough to offset the steeper decline in slot performance, which drives the bulk of operators’ income.
